Obenauf’s all natural ingredients extend the service life of
horse tack. There are two main issues to riding.
First, saddles and tack are constantly subjected to dust, sun,
dehydration, and rain, which cause loss of the natural oils and lead to
premature cracking and dry rot.
Obenuaf’s Leather Oil provides beeswax and resin to maintain
the surface, while a blend of natural oils penetrates to lubricate the inner
fibers. Apply using the lamb’s wool applicator or a clean cloth. Two applications
may be necessary to restore, protect, and waterproof neglected or severely
dried out leather. After every ride, before storing, apply an overcoat to
prevent dehydration, hardening, and to maintain the leather in the utmost
The second issue is horse sweat. Body acids (also from the
rider), salt and dehydration cause dry rot and premature cracking. Obenauf’s
Heavy Duty LP, with its time-release formula and chemical resistance properties
must be applied to all leather surfaces that contact the horse. This provides the necessary chemical and
waterproof (sweat proof) barrier on the underside of bridles, breast straps,
saddle skirts, fenders and harnesses required to extend the service life of
Dry, hardened leather and stiff, new leather has harmful
effects on horses. Chafing, and rubbing cause sore areas and open wounds. Pack
saddles are notorious for shifting on mountain trails. New tack or dried out
tack should be treated with Obenauf’s to make it pliable and comfortable before
putting it on a horse.
Saddle blankets should
be sprayed with at least two applications of Water Shield for protection.
These simple procedures will not only extend the life of your
investment in leather but your horse will appreciate them. You will as well.
