Horse and Tack Horse and Tack
Introduction | Waterproofing | Special Offer | Testimonials

Obenauf's all natural ingredients make it an ideal product to soften and extend the life of horse tack. Having trained and competed on Arabians and Quarter Horses in endurance races in the mountains of Idaho, we know the importance of horse care in extreme conditions. Obenauf's manufacturers three leather care products, Obenauf's Leather Oil, Obenauf's Heavy Duty Leather Preservative (LP), and Obenauf's Watershield. These remarkable products waterproof, preserve, restore, and protect your leather items from the elements as well as protect your horse from chafing, dry leather. In addition, our Watershield is awesome for NON-leather products such as fabric, canvas, rainslickers, etc. It offers the highest silicone content waterproofer available on the market and contains no harmful chemicals that will break down stitching or damage fibers! Read on to learn more about using Obenauf's to care for your saddles, bridles, and other equestrian leathers, or go right to our product listings to order now.

There are two main areas that riders need to be knowledgeable about when looking at leather care products for their horses:

Care of Horse Leather - Horse leather has two main issues unique to riding. The first is that saddles and tack are out in the hot sun and cold rainy mountain rides. This will dry out leather faster than almost anything. Obenauf's Leather Oil should be used on the exterior surfaces that get a beating from mother-nature. We recommend a three coat start to get the leather softer and water repellent. Then after every ride, a once over coat to keep the leather in top condition will keep your tack looking new.

The second unique issue is horse sweat. This is harder on leather than almost anything because of the salt content of sweat. Obenauf's LP should be used on all surfaces that are in contact with the horse. Endurance training and racing proved the point that a sweaty horse will curl the most beautiful leather and there is very little you can do to reverse the damage, once it is done. By creating a waterproof (sweatproof) barrier on the underside of bridles, breaststraps, saddle skirts and harnesses, you will extend the life of leather for decades and keep it looking new.

Care of your Horse - Many people do not realize the harmful effects of dry leather on their horse. Chafing and rubbing from unprotected, dryed out leather can create raw spots on your horse. It is extremely important to treat leather with Obenauf's LP to allow the oils to release into the underside of leather over the course of a trail ride or arena event. New tack or dryed out tack should be completely pliable before being put on a horse. Even if a saddle blanket is used, it can slip and allow chafing from the saddle skirt. A lot of tack has a rough underside that is not treated, which is even worse if not treated.

Do your horse a favor and make sure all leather that comes into contact with its skin is soft and pliable. Pack saddles are notorious for shifting on mountain trails and leather lanyards should be totally soft against the side of the pack animal. We have seen many pack animals with sores that fester once they are into camp and then they have to be doctored for a week until they come out, only to reopen the wound with a similar pack.

The rule of thumb is Obenauf's Oil on the exterior surface and Obenauf's LP on the rough underside and anywhere leather meets horseflesh. New leather should be softened before ever being put on the skin of your horse. We have also found Obenauf's to be an excellent treatment for horse hooves, since they will dry out and crack over time if not treated.
